Behold what manner of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and we are. Because of this the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

But whoever has the livelihood of the world and sees that his brother has need and shuts up his affections from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

But whoso may have the world's substance, and see his brother having need, and shut up his bowels from him, how abides the love of God in him?

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?
